Good Bye Internet

Not the most terribly original title I know, but it is true. I am leaving Vila and leaving the internet hopefully within the next few hours to go to my site, as my principal is headed this way to pick me up. I am not being entirely truthful, as my site will have something that resembles internet on a good day, but only when the generator is running. This won't be often, for now is the time of spel (a general word used for when you do not much of anything, pronounced "spell"). School is out, and won't start until late February, so all the teachers have gone. It is a boarding school, so the students are of course at home on one of the many islands in Vanuatu. The nearest town is a 30 minute walk, so I probably won't get much generator time until after phase two training ends mid February. I will have to be creative when writing my lesson plans.

We did end up getting bumped from the Chief's Nakamal, so we had our swearing in at the Vanuatu Institute of Hospitality and Tourism. It was really cool that the Ambassador was able to make it out from PNG. I heard he had to cancel his trip to swearing in last year because Hillary Clinton made a last minute trip to PNG during the same week.

This week we were afforded ample time to purchase and assemble what we think we need for two years at site. I am not sure I purchased the correct things, but I am sure of one thing: I'm broke. Who knew how awesome Chinese Bags were, but I have quickly grown very fond of them.

So there you have it, everything I own in Vanuatu. One suitcase full of electronics, a generator, a bag of clothes, a bag of papers, a bag of medical supplies, a bag of mosquito nets, a box of food, a box of dishes, a blanket, a mattress, a mat, a bush knife, and my trusty bucket.

So this is where I have been sitting for my last few moments, hanging out with the closest IT neighbor on Efate. So good bye Vila, and good bye Tanoliu, and good bye to all my new friends. We are off!
